We all know that diet and exercise are key components to helping you lose pounds, reduce body fat, and gain health benefits, but there is compelling evidence on why joining a structured program, such as Medifast, is a more effective approach to achieving your 2019 New Year’s Resolutions.
You’re ready to start living a healthier lifestyle and excited about the change. If you’re like most people your first thought is to join a gym, try the latest yoga or pilates class, or buy some new sneakers, when really you might want to consider going through your cabinets and getting rid of food that is high in sugar, ultra-processed or otherwise unhealthy. Experts say that focusing on exercise is not the fastest and most effective way to shed pounds. In fact, when it comes to losing weight, your diet is much more important than your exercise routine. Here’s why:
Why exercise isn’t that effective at helping you lose weight
An editorial in the Journal of Sports Medicine argued that while exercise is an important tool in reducing the risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and other health conditions, it isn’t enough when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off. A common misconception that many people have is that they can “out-exercise a bad diet”. However, exercise consumes far fewer calories than many people think. Thirty minutes of jogging or swimming laps might burn off 350 calories. Many people, overweight or fit, can’t keep up a strenuous 30-minute exercise regiment, day in and day out. They might exercise a few times a week, if that.
Why focusing on food is more efficient
Although we have little control over the amount of calories our bodies burn in a day, we have total control over how many calories we consume. Focusing on what and how much you’re eating is key in long-term weight management. To get healthy and stay that way, the trend has to continue and become a lifestyle change, not just for a week or two. You must focus on healthy behavioral changes that you can practice for life, not just a quick fix gimmick that always results in weight regain.
So if you’re looking to make changes in your life, the best thing you can do is keep a healthy, nutritional diet in mind. For those who may initially lack the discipline or even time to prepare healthy meals, Medifast will take all the guess work out of eating foods that will complement your physical and mental well-being.
You’re one step closer to becoming the best version of yourself in 2019!
