Spring is here and with it, renewed hope, fresh growth and vibrant colors; the energy in the air is palpable. One almost universal rite of the season is spring cleaning. Taking down the curtains, dusting the blinds and exploring corners of our house that were likely forgotten during a too long winter. It is a perfect time to declutter and purge, getting rid of things that we no longer need. It can be satisfying to organize the closet that spills over when we open it, or to donate the sweater we haven’t worn in 15 years.
Not surprisingly, the same thorough approach applies to our health goals. Much like spring cleaning our homes, it starts with taking inventory and an honest assessment of what brings us utility, and what items no longer support our future selves. Through this process, we reconnect with those people or behaviors that bring us meaning and allow us to move forward. It might seem tricky to know where to start. But just as you wouldn’t be able to thoroughly deep clean your entire house in one day, it helps to break it down, and tackle it room-by-room:
Dust off your motivation: When you think about the original reasons you started your weight loss program, has anything changed? Or do you need to reclaim that goal? Perhaps you are mid-way to your ultimate goal and need to set new, shorter-term mini-goals with rewards along the way?
Declutter your social support: Are you surrounding yourself with people that pick you up when times are challenging and truly celebrate your successes? Do they support the life you are living now?
Organize your resources: Are you taking advantage of all the tools offered by your Medifast program? Using the Healthy Lifestyle Workbook, trying new recipes and of course, coming in for weekly visits?
Scrub your habits: Are there habits or routines you practiced initially as a new client or when you reached your goal that you might have drifted away from? Do you still track and plan your meals?
Re-fresh your self-care: Are you building time in your schedule just for those things that give you energy? Whether it is making a commitment to be more active, putting away devices to have more quality family time, or working on more restful sleep habits?
“The space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.”
Letting go of the past and facing the future. We intentionally make this effort because it yields such tangible and meaningful results. And every new season we do it again. It anchors us in what is important, and leaves us refocused and refreshed – ready to face the warmer weather with clarity, unencumbered. The good news is we are your spring cleaning partners! No matter what you decide to tackle, we are here for you. It is worth it!
