Summer is here, and in the land of 10,000 lakes that means it is the beginning of cabin season. For many Minnesotans and Wisconsinites, weekends in the summer are spent at the cabin and on the boat. Eating right might seem like a challenge while on a cabin getaway, but here are some tips for keeping the food and drink options healthy and delicious.
Take advantage of in season fruits and vegetables!
The summer is the best time to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. Your local farmer’s market is full of healthy hidden gems! Take advantage of all the in-season choices and pack a good variety for your weekend at the cabin. Vegetables make a great snack and are an excellent alternative to chips or pretzels. Pro tip: try wrapping your favorite lean protein and vegetables together in foil and toss it on the grill for an easy pre-portioned Lean and Green meal.
Limit unhealthy snacking while on the boat.
Healthy snacks are essential for a long day on the lake! Pack up the cooler with some items that are loaded with nutrients, such as celery and colorful peppers. Bring along some Medifast meals and snacks and of course, don’t forget the water. Make it easy to stick to your healthy choices by leaving the chips and dip at home!
Preplan your weekend meals.
For many, a weekend at the cabin is the perfect time to relax and unwind after a long week! Make this time even more relaxing by preplanning your meals for the weekend. Choose your favorite recipes, make a grocery list, and bring all the ingredients you need with you to the cabin. This way, you won’t be tempted by the unhealthy options in the grocery store aisles!
Try delicious alcohol-free beverage options!
Long summer days often make us want to enjoy a cool cocktail or beer. However, there are hidden sugars and calories that can derail your weight loss progress in many of these alcoholic drinks! This year try some healthy alternatives. Reach for a non-alcoholic sparkling water or give one of our delicious water infusers a try! If you’re craving a cocktail, try one of our delicious mocktail recipes. Water is especially important during the hot summer days. Always make sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water each day!
Summer is the best time to stay active outdoors. Whether you are doing yard work, swimming, or simply going for a walk around the lake, all movement can be healthful. Depending on what is available to you, here are some other activity options you can try: paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, walking, or yoga.
